The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded on 16 November 1945.
Today, UNESCO functions as a laboratory of ideas and a standard-setter to forge universal agreements on emerging ethical issues. UNESCO promotes the dissemination and sharing of information and knowledge – while helping Member States to build their human and institutional capacities in diverse fields. In short, UNESCO promotes international co-operation among its 192* Member States and six Associate Members in the fields of education, science, culture and communication. Through its strategies and activities, UNESCO is actively pursuing the Millennium Development
Goals.

Established in 1913, the Association of Commonwealth Universities is the oldest inter-university network in the world. Today's ACU combines the expertise and reputation of over ninety years' experience with new and innovative programmes designed to meet the needs of universities in the 21st century. Athabasca University (AU) is Canada’s leading distance-education and online university: Canada’s Open University. Currently serving about 32,000 students per year, the University has experienced a period of rapid growth which has seen student numbers double over a six-year period.
